Do I Need Home Health Care? That all depends on many things.

Do I Need Home Health Care?

from: Anonymous
(Redlands, CA, USA)

Anonymous Question: I lost my balance and fell a month ago and sustained a back injury that landed me in a rehab facility for two weeks. Now that I'm home, I just want to resume my normal life but my family thinks that I need home health physical therapy. My doctor is willing to write an order for it but says that it's up to me. I feel a lot better and am getting around pretty good even though I live alone. Do I need home health care?

Marcia's Answer: Your question is one that many have. Without talking to you and assessing your individual and unique situation, your question is not cut and dried. There are many different factors that go into helping you and your health care professionals decide if home care is necessary.

Many patients feel they are "forced" into home health, often by well meaning doctors and family and unfortunately at times by greedy and fraudulant home health care agencies. But ultimately it is your right to refuse and your responsibility to accept the possible consequenses if you do.

In addition to discovering if home health physical therapy is for you, you also must:

  • be homebound.
  • have a doctor's order for the service(s) provided.
  • have a skilled need - that is a need that only a medical professional can provide.
