Elder Abuse (part 3)

knock knock, who's there?

Elder abuse is sadly increasing as our precious baby boomers age. With an increased number of boomers comes an increased need for home health care. Just as others have scammed millions of dollars from our boomers, they have also come right to their doors acting as someone there to help only to scam them in their own homes.

You must know who is making a housecall! You must be very cautious. People will try to get into your home anyway they can.

Some scammers are posing as home care professionals - gaining access to your home and leaving you vulnerable, injured or worse.

Keep your door latched if you are unsure. Talk to them through a window and best of all, ask them to call you. If they don't have your number, they shouldn't be there! But don't let them in just because they have your number!

Take these steps to check who's standing at your door! Don't become a statistic of elder abuse! Call 911 if you are suspicious!

Can I see your name badge?

Does it look official? Is the company name as well as the persons name and title on it? The providers last name may or may not be on the tag for their own security reasons.

Can you tell me who you are here to see?

Your Health care provider should be able to state clearly whothey are there to see and for what reason.

    What doctor sent you?

Medical home health care providers should not be showing up at your door without a doctor’s order to do so. Don’t accept any answers other than the answer to your question. Remember also that even if a doctor did order this service, it is your right to refuse it. Make some phone calls to your doctor and to the home health agency represented to inquire about home health care if you are clueless as to why they showed up. Generally, doctors discuss home health care service options with their patients and caregivers before setting it up.

Can you tell me the patients birthday?

If you still have concerns, ask a more personal question concerning the patients Medicare or insurance policy number. A legitimate home care provider will have the information handy.

Can I take your number and call you for a better appointment time?

This is a courteous, yet safe way to keep someone out of your home while checking to see that they are who they say they are.

These steps will allow you the time to thoroughly check the validity of who is at your door and will frighten away anyone who should not be there. Elder abuse is something you can help. Keep your home, yourself and your loved ones safe!
